Cobra Seats for Classic Minis.

Everything you need to know about Cobra seats for your Classic Mini.

Choosing the right front seats is an important part of any Classic Mini interior, but with so many options available, it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start. I've put together this guide to give you the information and recommendations you need to choose the right Cobra seats for your Mini with confidence.

Cobra seat swaps are one of the most popular upgrades for a Classic Mini, and it's easy to see why. They offer a great combination of classic styling, comfort and practicality, and when retrimmed by myself to match the rest of your new interior, give you plenty of options to personalise the overall look.

Cobra produce a wide range of seats, but I've focused this guide on the five models that have become particularly popular choices for Classic Minis over the years: the Cobra Classic, Cobra Classic RS, Cobra Cub, Cobra Monte-Carlo and Cobra Le Mans. These seats have a long history of being used in Classic Minis and remain some of the most popular options today.

I'll take a closer look at each one, including the dimensions, styling and key features, along with my own thoughts and recommendations based on how each seat works within a Classic Mini interior.

Cobra Classic

The Cobra Classic is the proper traditional fixed-back bucket seat, with large side bolsters and a distinctive retro racing appearance. It's available with or without headrests, and is the seat to choose if you want your Mini to have a genuine old-school race car feel. It works particularly well in road and race-inspired builds.

The Classic is also available as the Classic CS, which incorporates harness slots and allows a four-point harness to be fitted. With its strong side support and fixed-back design, it offers excellent ergonomic support and protection for a seat with such a traditional appearance.

My recommendation: If you want your Mini to look and feel like a retro race car, this is the seat for you.

Cobra Classic RS

The Cobra Classic RS is the most comfortable of the fixed-back bucket seat options. Unlike the other fixed-back bucket seats, the shell is fully foamed around the sides and back, giving it a more supportive and padded feel.

It's a good-sized seat that works really well within the Classic Mini cockpit. Its wider, fuller shape gives it a softer interpretation of the traditional bucket seat, making it a great option if you want the character of a fixed-back bucket without going for the more extreme, race-inspired appearance of the Cobra Classic. The open design also gives the Classic RS its own distinctive look, which suits a wide range of Classic Mini interiors.

My recommendation: If comfort is your priority but you still want a traditional retro bucket seat, the Classic RS is the obvious choice.

Cobra Cub

The Cobra Cub is the smallest and most compact of the five seats, and is available with or without headrests. Its low-back appearance looks fantastic within a Classic Mini interior and is particularly well suited to builds inspired by early Minis, where the aim is to keep the factory appearance from the outside, with the shoulders of the seats sitting below the window line.

The compact design also gives the Cub a very different seating position from the larger Cobra bucket seats. The shoulder section generally sits below the driver's shoulders, while even with the headrest fully extended, the head will sit above it. The headrest version provides a level of back and head support more comparable to a traditional single-post headrest seat, while the non-headrest version has a feel closer to an earlier non-reclining Mini seat - but with a snugger fit around your sides.

My recommendation: A fantastic-looking seat if appearance and compact dimensions are your priorities, but I'd consider the ergonomic compromises carefully before choosing it.

Cobra Monte-Carlo

The Cobra Monte-Carlo is the all-round bucket seat option. It offers good ergonomic support while retaining a proper racing-inspired appearance, without looking quite as extreme as the Cobra Classic. The shape provides good support around the driver without making the seat feel overly enclosed, making it a great choice for a Classic Mini that is going to be driven regularly.

It's also a slightly more modern-looking bucket seat than the other historic options, which makes it particularly well suited to 1990s-inspired Classic Mini builds with a race theme. It has a more purposeful, contemporary appearance while still retaining enough of the classic styling to sit naturally within a Mini interior.

Overall, it's a seat that works across a wide range of builds, from more traditional Minis through to heavily modified and competition-inspired cars.

My recommendation: If you're looking for a great balance of ergonomics, style and a genuine bucket-seat appearance, the Monte-Carlo is a very strong all-round choice.

Cobra Le Mans

The Cobra Le Mans is quite different from the other four seats. It's a reclining sports seat rather than a fixed-back bucket seat, making it a proper alternative to factory front seats options and a direct rival to the SPi and MPi front seats.

Ergonomically, it's excellent. The reclining backrest makes it a more conventional road-car seat and gives it a very different feel from the fixed-back options. The downside is its size: it is a big seat within the Classic Mini cockpit, and its styling is much more modern than the other Cobra options, with strong 1990s fast Ford influences.

My recommendation: A great choice if you're looking to upgrade from your original Mini front seats.

Which Cobra Seat Is Right For You?

As you can see, each of these Cobra seats has its own strengths, and the right choice really comes down to what you're looking for from your Mini.

If you want the traditional race car look, the Cobra Classic is hard to beat. If comfort is your priority while still wanting a fixed-back bucket seat, the Classic RS is the obvious choice. The Cub offers the smallest and most compact option, while the Monte-Carlo provides a great all-round balance. If you're looking to upgrade your original Mini front seats, the reclining Le Mans offers a more conventional seating position and a completely different approach.

There isn't a single right answer, but hopefully this guide has given you a better understanding of the differences between them and helped you decide which Cobra seat is right for your Mini.

Alternatively, there are plenty of other seat options available if none of these are quite right for your build.

I love what I do.

If you're thinking about restoring and/or replacing the interior of your Classic Mini, I'd love to hear about your project.
